Many states now require carpet and flooring installers to be licensed bonded and insured. This is designed to protect the homeowner in case of shoddy workmanship or to cover any damages or injuries caused by the contractor. You should always call your state or local agency to make sure whoever you hire to do work on or inside your home or business is properly licensed, bonded and insured according to the State and Local Laws where you live.

If a license is not required in your state you should still hire a contractor who has liability insurance. This will protect you in the event there is any damage caused by the contractor.  Ask to see a copy of his insurance policy and call the insurance company to verify it is in effect. You can also ask that your name and jobsite address be named on the policy to ensure you are fully covered. The insurance company will be happy to mail or fax you a copy of the policy showing you as covered under the contractor’s policy.

You can also check to see  if there have been any prior complaints filed against the contractor in question. Some state or local agencies keep records of complaints or judgements filed against contractors.

Why is it SO important to only hire carpet installers who have LIABILITY INSURANCE?

Liability insurance typically covers property damage or bodily injury caused by the contractor that occur as a result of the contractor’s work.

Limitations on insurance contracts vary widely and policy exclusions for specific exposures are common. It’s important for you to understand the coverage your contractor has in place and you should ask your contractor what  his liability insurance policy limits are and what  losses the policy may or may not cover.

Most liability insurance policy limits for carpet layers or flooring installers are at or above $1,000,000 in overall coverage, perhaps depending on the size and scope of the contractor’s business, number of employees and annual sales volume.

Why is it SO important to only hire carpet installers who have a SURETY BOND?

A Surety Bond Protects homeowners from shoddy workmaship and will help pay the cost of removing, repairing or replacing bad or incompetent work by the contractor. It is common to have a $5,000, $10,000 or a $20,000 surety bond depending on the size and scope of the contractor’s business, number of employees and annual sales volume.
